After the disappointing start to the year at the Easter Thunderball we were looking forward to this, the first round of the 2004 Nitro Funny Car Championship. The car had been serviced at the previous meeting and the axle was now repaired. In the meantime the spare engine had been repaired, serviced and was ready to step in at a minutes notice. The crew were keen and eager to get going. We were ready to start the defense of our title. The only thing that could stop us was the weather...
Saturday
The weatherman was in a depressing mood. Rain eh! What does he know? Shakespeare County Raceway has it's own micro-climate. Weather forecasts do not apply there.

Got to the track. It was raining. Had coffee and tried to warm up. Still raining. Put up the frame for the awning. Still raining. Watched some DVDs. Still raining. Decided to pack up. Found we hadn't used anything. Still raining. Went home.

Sunday
Now then. Writing the next two days report is going to be interesting because I wasn't there. My wife and I were expecting our second child, who was now a week overdue, and he decided that as I hadn't had a lot of excitement on the Saturday it would be a good idea to make his entrance in the early hours of Sunday morning.

However, as it turned out there wasn't a lot to write about. You will remember, if you read the race report from the last meeting, that the car was ready to roll. And roll it finally did on Sunday afternoon, all the way to the pairing lanes where a problem was found with the lever for the second fuel pump. An attempt to rectify the problem on the spot proved fruitless and alas the team had to return to the trailer without running.

That was it for Sunday.

Monday
Raining again! By the time it brightened up in the afternoon it was too late for us to run.

And that about sums it up for what turned out to be a very disappointing weekend as far as racing goes. On reflection the title of 'Excitement Nationals' couldn't have been more misleading! The weather however is one of the few things that we cannot do anything about and to lose so much of a meeting to the rain is actually quite rare. Despite what you might think about British Bank Holiday weather! On the bright side this is the shortest race report I have ever written so you have been spared the usual inane ramblings that you have come to enjoy/expect/dislike/dread on these pages.

In a moment of absent-mindedness I had left my camera in the trailer overnight on Saturday. (Well how was I to know that the baby would choose that night to emerge!). And when I collected it on Monday afternoon I discovered that someone (probably Lee) had decided that a race report of a rained out meeting with no photos would be unbearable. So here are some of the best of the pictures that I found. Please don't write and complain, these really are the best ones!

The Showtime Racing brains.

Bob Jarrett at the back, Bill Sherratt in front of him. Nigel Payne to the right. They are not bored. They are thinking really hard! (Oh alright they're bored). (I'll show you how the flash works at the next meeting Lee!)

The Showtime Racing tractor unit

Leyland Daf 95 series. It's blue.

The Showtime Racing generator

It's next to the trailer. Er...the things coming
out of it are cables....are you still reading this?

A Showtime Racing top end bloke

Bunch is reading a very interesting
article on airbags for motorcycles...

Showtime Racing are next in action at the second round of the Nitro Funny Car Championship at Santa Pod Raceway's Main Event on the weekend of May 28th - 31st. See you there!
